Long tail keywords are three, four, or five key word phrases that are specific to what your website sells. When a customer enters a highly specific search phrase, they already know what they want to buy. In most cases, these specific searches will result in sales if the website provides exactly what the customer desires. Customers conduct generic searches when they are browsing and seeing what is available on various websites. It's similar to window shopping.

Long tail keywords are used to target customers who are specifically looking for a product. Assume a customer becomes interested in a product. He'll look for websites that sell that product. Assume the customer is looking for electric bikes, for example. All sites that contain these two keywords will be returned by the search engines. He will now launch a website that lists the best electric bikes. He'll look through them and decide which bike he wants to buy. Assume he enjoys the Airbike MX5. He will now look for that specific bike.

It is where highly specific multi phrase long tail keywords are far easier for search engines to rank for. If you use generic words as keywords as an internet marketer, you will almost certainly face stiff competition from top-ranking sites. You cannot compete with well-known websites such as About.com, Wikipedia.org, Amazon, eBay, and others. As a result, you must find appropriate long tail keywords to use in your website's pages.
