Urdu has between 60 and 70 million native speakers. According to the 2001 census, there were 52 million in India, accounting for 6% of the population; approximately 10 million in Pakistan, accounting for 7.57% of the population; and several hundred thousand in the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Bangladesh. However, knowing Urdu allows you to communicate with far more people than that, because Hindustani, of which Urdu is one variety, is the world's fourth most widely spoken language, after Mandarin, English, and Spanish. The estimated number of speakers is uncertain due to the difficulty in distinguishing between Urdu and Hindi speakers in India and Pakistan, as well as estimating the number of people for whom Urdu is a second language.
